Resolution Accomplished

How did your 2018 New Year’s resolutions work out?

  • What resolutions?
  • Recycling them for 2019
  • I made some headway
  • Mission accomplished

Isaiah 26:12 (NIV)
All that we have accomplished you have done for us.

My “one word” resolution for 2018 was accomplish, tied to this verse from Isaiah. Indeed, God accomplished more than I expected: he closed one door and opened others. He refined some projects and introduced new ideas (some to be further refined in 2019). He proved once again that I am a work in progress.

What did God accomplish in and through you in 2018?

Sheltering Faith

China continues its crackdown on Christians. In December, more than 160 members of the Early Rain Covenant church were arrested, along with their pastor, Wang Yi. Pastor Wang anticipated this and had prepared a statement to be released should he be imprisoned for more than 48 hours (as posted by China Aid):

“The calling that I have received requires me to use non-violent methods to disobey those human laws that disobey the Bible and God. My Savior Christ also requires me to joyfully bear all costs for disobeying wicked laws … The goal of disobedience is not to change the world but to testify about another world … If God decides to use the persecution of this Communist regime against the church to help more Chinese people to despair of their futures, to lead them through a wilderness of spiritual disillusionment and through this to make them know Jesus, if through this he continues disciplining and building up his church, then I am joyfully willing to submit to God’s plans, for his plans are always benevolent and good.”

Honor Pastor Wang’s faith, Lord. Shelter and strengthen him and others who are persecuted for your sake. Build that dedication into our souls. Teach us to be obedient to your call.

Simply One

Romans 12:5 (NASB)
We, who are many,
are one body in Christ.

Not should be. Not will be. Are–here, now and forever.

Change for Good

Lord God, I confess that I often seek comfort when your goal is growth. Teach me to embrace change, in your name.

You’re a Gift

1 Corinthians 12:4 (NIV)
There are different kinds of gifts,
but the same Spirit distributes them.

Be the gift God intended.

O Come, All Ye Faithful

You’re a brick. Where will we find you?

  • Faithful in my assigned space
  • Off-kilter, but in my place
  • On the lookout for a comfortable spot
  • I’m a loose brick, out on my own

Wise words from Paul:

Ephesians 2:22 (ESV)
In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

Wise words from Corrie ten Boom:

“Be united with other Christians. A wall with loose bricks is not good. The bricks must be cemented together.”

Be a faithful brick in God’s wall.

Safe Space for Spiritual (and Practical) Help

The dear folks at Street LIFE Ministries take the good news of Jesus Christ to the streets of New York City.

Every Tuesday, you’ll find them serving the homeless in the Lower East Side at Tompkins Square Park,

“meeting their practical needs with clothing, food and hygiene kits as well as being a source of encouragement and hope for their emotional and spiritual needs.”

Practical, indeed–with underwear, socks, soap and shampoo. Spiritual as well–praying with and for them. We can help, practically and spiritually. We can share our money, our time, our prayers.

Lord, give us eyes to see the need, hearts eager to help and prayers rising to you for the homeless and for those who serve them. Be their hope, strength and shelter. Amen.

War and Peace

“What! At peace with the Father,
and at war with His children?
It cannot be.”

The Christmas Spirit

Be like Christ for Christmas:

1 Corinthians 10:24 (NLT)
Don’t be concerned for your own good
but for the good of others.
