Shelter from Violence

“We want to encourage the nation to make Chicago their prayer target.”
Pastor Dimas Salaberrios
Concerts of Prayer Greater New York

The violence in Chicago is prayer-worthy. In the first half of August, more than 100 were shot and more than 15 killed.

The “Jesus Summer” is a 40-day outreach (started July 14) as a Christian response to the violence in Chicago. Some pray on street corners, some go door-to-door, some feed the homeless, some set up programs for children. The goal is the transformation of the city through the transformation of the souls who live there. Let’s join in and target Chicago with our prayers.

Lord God, we grieve for these young lives needlessly lost. Our hearts, like yours, break for those who think violence is the answer. Change their hearts, O God. Transform the city from a place where blood is poured out in anger to a place transformed by the blood of Christ. In His power we pray.

God Speaks. Why Not Listen?

“Why are we so terrified for God to speak to us? It is because we know that when God speaks we must either do what He asks or tell Him we will not obey.
Oswald Chambers (1874-1917)
My Utmost for His Highest, Feb. 12

God rarely offers suggestions.

Just Follow Directions

Jeremiah 17:27 (ERV)
But if you don’t listen to me and obey me,
then bad things will happen.

What part of “follow the directions” don’t you understand?

Simply Listen

You don’t have to be a good reader
to be a good listener.

Listen More, Talk Less

James 1:19 (NIV)
Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak.

What would prayer look like if we spent more time listening and less time talking?

Listen Up!

When do you listen best to God?

  • When I’m in trouble
  • When life is good
  • When I’m in the mood

Jeremiah 22:21 (NLT)
I warned you when you were prosperous, but you replied, ‘Don’t bother me.’ You have been that way since childhood–you simply will not obey me!

If you won’t listen to God when all is well, what should God do to get your attention?

Are you asking for trouble?

Safe Steps

“The day Ulrich arrived on the Africa Mercy for his free surgery, volunteer surgeon, Dr. Frank Haydon, was shocked. “He moved like an insect. Like a cricket. I’d never seen anything quite like it.’”

12 year old Ulrich’s muscles hadn’t developed at the same pace as his bones. Hand-held sticks supported his body weight. His hands and joints hurt.

After several complex surgeries, Ulrich walks upright, no more sticks.

Worldwide, five billion people lack access to safe surgery. For 40 years, Mercy Ships has taken state-of-the-art healthcare to places without clean water, reliable power and adequate medical services. In 2017, Mercy Ships 2,792 surgeries and 19,309 dental procedures. They trained more than 1800 African healthcare professionals.

Lord, bless Ulrich as he safely steps into his future. Give Dr. Haydon and other medical volunteers the wisdom and stamina to continue their healing ministry. Provide the needed resources for Mercy Ships to serve where hope and health have been hard to find.

Yard-Sticking

What’s yard-sticking?

It’s when I compare myself to others. Mostly, I think I fall on the short end of the measuring stick.

The only yardstick that counts belongs to God, and he measures me with grace.

Self-Esteem and Skills

“Self-esteem without skills
is a hollow accomplishment.”
(from There Are No Shortcuts by Rafe Esquith)

Do you agree?

Social Media and Lies

People post their best photos and happiest moments on social media. Their lives look perfect. And when yours doesn’t, the enemy whispers, “You’re no good. What a loser.”

Remember what Jesus said about the enemy.

John 8:44 (NIV)
There is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

So who are you gonna believe? Father God, or the father of lies?

P.S. You are not a loser.
