Timeless Gratitude

Here in the US, it’s the week of Thanksgiving. I’m looking to minds wiser than mine to jumpstart my thankful thinking.

“When it comes to life the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.”
G. K. Chesterton (1874-1935)

Gratitude, Lord! Give me a thankful heart.

Gilbert Chesterton had a way with words. He wrote a hundred books, 200 short stories, more than 4000 newspaper essays, lots of poems and a few plays. He’s known for his commons sense, humor, and eloquence.

One Response to Timeless Gratitude

Shirlee – Once again, your timing is perfect. I’m typing this listening to Rory Feek’s, ‘The Times they are A-Changin” (It is a remake of the old Bob Dylan classic from 1964. Alas, I digress….) Anyway, I spent most of the early Sunday morning hours trying to rally a “thankful heart” for the coming week of Thanksgiving and asked the Lord to help me. In the 12 hrs since I prayed that short, “Help me, Lord, to be thankful” prayer, my heart is overflowing with gratitude. Keith (my husband) and I received a call from a friend whose pipes froze and her water heater broke. My husband was able to assess the situation, my niece answered the call, offered a local (trusted) plumber who charged less than normal to help out (on a Sunday afternoon). Amen. Within the hour, we received another call from the local Salvation Army. I will be the “Bell Ringer” tomorrow from 1-4pm at a local supermarket (because they are short of Bell Ringers to stand the Kettles and the Kettle collection is an important part of their annual fundraising) On the way to ‘ring the bell’ tomorrow morning, we’re dropping off some old coats at the Church for their coat giveaway. The Lord answered the “help me” prayer by opening my eyes or just putting my eyes back up to Him (where they should have been all along!)
p.s. Looks like I’ve left another long-winded comment on your post. LOL – hoping to live up to Charles Dickens!
