Neon Bright, Guiding Light

The lights of the season shine brightly–guiding you to sales or to the Savior?

Matthew 2:1-2 (CEV)
Some wise men from the east came to Jerusalem and said, “Where is the child born to be king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.”

Take care which lights you follow.

  1. The merchants of society
seek every way to please us,
and at its height, the idiocy:
“See the Tomb of Infant Jesus!”
    Things are not improving,
    and I hope I don’t sound mean,
    but what is Santa doing
    in the church nativity scene?
    Commercialism never ends,
and it’s paint up as cheer:
    “I think that I deserve a Benz,
for I’ve been good this year.”
    Hark the herald angels sing
to music from a massed ka-CHING.

    • Shirlee Abbott says:

ON the flip side, we know a couple who moved to the US from the old Soviet Union. When “Silent Night” played over the grocery store loudspeakers, they cried for joy. “We are living in a country that celebrates Christ’s birth, even in the stores!” Shortly thereafter, they looked in amazement–“How many kinds of butter do Americans need?”

      • That’s an excellent question…how many kinds of butter DO we need?

Well, at least two…spreadable for sandwiches, and stick for some cookie recipies (where the butter has to be frozen, and mixed into the batter in pea-sized pieces).
