I’ve been to hell, and have returned
although I’ve lost what’s dear,
and though I’m blackened and I’m burned,
I’ve left behind all fear.
Life is hard and then you die,
and then there’s tempered grace
that takes you upward, by and by,
till you behold God’s face.
I think that I may cause Him
a feeling like surprise,
because I’ll go out on a limb
and look Him in the eyes.
What He’ll do I do not know,
but I do not think we’ll come to blows.
