Proverbs 2: Knowledge

Proverbs 2:6 (NLT)
For the Lord grants wisdom!
From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Knowledge
, in Hebrew daath, from the word yada, meaning “to know.”

Yada, not as a passing acquaintance, but as an intimate friend. Yada, the way God knows who we are, where we are and what we’re thinking (Psalm 139). From God’s mouth comes yada: to know Him and to know ourselves.

“Let me know you, O you who know me; then shall I know even as I am known. “
Augustine of Hippo (354-430)

Morning Prayer: Wisdom

Good morning, Lord. You promise to give wisdom — all we need do is ask (James 1:5). So here I am, O God, asking for wisdom. I need it to decide where to go, what to do, what to say, how to spend my time. Your wisdom is laid out on the pages of the Bible. As I read, let Your Word take root in my soul.

May I be good soil where the seeds of Your Word thrive and bring forth a great a great harvest of wisdom
(Matthew 13:23).

Proverbs 2: Wisdom

Proverbs 2: 6a (AMPC)
For the Lord gives skillful and godly Wisdom.

Wisdom, in Hebrew chokmah:

        • skill
        • prudence
        • shrewdness
        • divine energy

By wisdom, God established the earth (Job 38). Through wisdom the Israelites could dwell in the promised land (Deuteronomy 4). With wisdom, Solomon ruled from the kingdom from the Euphrates to Egypt (1 Kings 4).

That same chokmah awaits you — in the pages of the Bible.

Morning Prayer: Bible Study

Good morning, Lord. Thank You for the wisdom of Your Word. Forgive me for treating Bible study as a daily duty — teach me to delight in it. As I read, Holy Spirit, give me the power to understand what it means and apply it to my life. Use it to renew my mind (Romans 12:2). Fill my mind with the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16).

Prepare me for the challenges I will face today and in days to come, in Jesus’ name.

Morning Prayer: the Presence of God

Good morning, Lord. Let me walk through this weekend fully aware that I am “in Christ” — that is, aware of Your presence surrounding me at every step. Let me breathe out worldly wisdom and desires, let me breathe in the discernment and power of the Holy Spirit. Guide me, heavenly Father, with Your strong right hand.

Repentance and Refreshment

Acts 3:19-20 (Phillips)

Now you must repent and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out, that time after time your souls may know the refreshment that comes from the presence of God.

Secret sin can come between you and God, leaving you feeling dried up and deserted. Confession and repentance open the door to a flood of blessing, refreshment from God. Soak it up!

Morning Prayer: Grace and Mercy

Good morning, Lord. Thank You for grace — for blessings I don’t deserve. Thank You for Your mercy — saving me from the punishment I do deserve. Teach me to be like You: quick to bless others (even when they don’t deserve it) and slow to jump to conclusions (even when it looks obvious).

Teach me to do to others as You do to me.

Why Repent?

“Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, without church discipline, communion without confession, absolution without personal confession.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Nachfolge, 1937
The Cost of Discipleship

Reflect. Confess. Repent.

Morning Prayer: Be Good

Good morning, Lord. You are so good to me, it seems like it would be easy for me to be good back. But alas! Even when I put on a good face, my thoughts often wander down ungodly paths … and all too often, my words and deeds follow. You know it all, Almighty God, I cannot hide my thoughts and actions from You.

And yet, You don’t abandon me. Thank You for grace! Teach me Your ways, O Lord, I want to walk in Your truth (Psalm 86:11).
