What is He calling you to do?
Good morning, Lord. I make choices every day. And those choices have consequences–some consequences are minor, others change the direction of my life. Scripture doesn’t spell out every choice, but it gives guidelines for choosing.
Teach me to store up the wisdom from your Word, to stockpile biblical knowledge and understanding in my memory banks, to have Your good sense ready for whatever comes my way (Proverbs 2:1-11).
God speaks blessings and curses:
Deuteronomy 11:27-28 (NLT)
You will be blessed if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today. But you will be cursed if you reject the commands of the Lord your God and turn away from him and worship gods you have not known before.
Who says, “I’ll take the curses, thank You very much”?
Genesis 1:2-3 (NRSVUE)
The earth was complete chaos, and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
God still speaks into chaos:
Good morning, Lord. You are all-wise, all-knowing. Why do I argue with you? Why do I insist on doing things my way? Forgive my foolish rebellion. Your rules for living are spelled out on the pages of Your Word. Grant me first the desire to study them, then the discernment to understand them and finally, the self-discipline to follow them.
Teach me to do things Your way and not my own.
Proverbs 2:7a (CEV)
God gives helpful advice to everyone who obeys him.
Helpful advice, tushiyyah in Hebrew, translated into English:
Best advice ever — straight from the pages of the Bible. Are you listening?
Good morning, Lord. Your Word should be life-changing — that is, not only ideas stored in my mind, but actions that play out here and now, in everything I say and do. Help me understand the difference between Your wisdom and the worldview of my culture.
Show me what needs to change and grant me the self-discipline to put those changes into practice.
Proverbs 2:6 (NLT)
For the Lord grants wisdom!
From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Understanding, in Hebrew tebunah, meaning discernment, skilled reasoning. Understanding takes that God-given wisdom and knowledge and applies them to our lives here and now.
Good morning, Lord. You know me — better than I know myself. I want to know You — not just know about You, but know You, face-to-face. friend-to-friend. As I get to know You better, You can help me know myself better. As I know You better, You can reshape me to be more like You. Make it so, I pray, in Jesus’ name.
