Running . . . To or Fro?

Early in our marriage, we were houseparents at a home for wayward boys. Sometimes one of them would go missing. We were taught to ask ourselves if they were running to something, or away. Running to? We knew where to look.

I wonder if this also applies to refugees. Are they running to, or running away? Those who are running to America, the ones who long for what we have to offer (flaws included)–shouldn’t we welcome them with open arms? The ones who are running away, the ones whose hearts are still firmly rooted in their homeland–maybe our resources (our money, our influence and our prayers) are better spent providing safe space closer to the land they love, and doing all we can to restore peace.

Lord God, if you marched my works across the mall in Washington, would they bring me praise? More importantly, would they bring you praise?

Confusing Signs

Within a single week’s time, we had the Women’s March on Washington and the March for Life. All those signs and banners! Are you feeling frustrated or confused?

What people do is their own business
I’m into doing, not marching
Some people are just crazy

Proverbs 31:30-31 (NET)
A woman who fears the Lord will be praised.
Give her credit for what she has accomplished,
and let her works praise her in the city gates.

It isn’t about the signs, people.

Pray for Life

Today is the March for Life. Bless all the dedicated souls who make their way to Washington to make their opinions known.

Good news: the US abortion rate has fallen to its lowest level since Roe v Wade.

Let us pray beyond the statistics.

Lord, we pray that the abortion rate will continue to fall . . . not because the laws change, but because hearts change. Amen.

Who Will Weep?

Let’s turn our hearts to abortion (as thousands make their annual trek to Washington for Friday’s March for Life).

OK, I’ll say it. I think abortion is sin. But don’t paint me judgmental. The woman who chooses abortion is no worse than me, because I too am a sinner —
all have sinned (Romans 3:23).

A lot of sins can be corrected: I can repay what I stole. I can confess the error I covered up. I can make it up to the person I hurt.

What’s lost with an abortion can never be recovered. I weep for that loss.

Whose Job?

Scripture doesn’t tell us to care for the poor with our taxes, or to assign government to tend to the sick, or to let the courts tell us how to love one another. Nope, it’s all my job, all your job.

Matthew 5:16 (NIV)
Let your light shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds
and glorify your Father in heaven.

Don’t expect government to do for us what God is calling us to do for him.

Things are gonna change for the better!

Time will prove whether the change at the top makes a difference, and if it does, whether the difference is an improvement. Likely, tomorrow will look a lot like yesterday.

What, Then, Shall We Pray?

Love him or hate him, American has a new President. And Scripture reminds us to pray for those in authority–love ’em or hate ’em.

If words fail you, quote Paul:

Philippians 1:9-10
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless.

Colossians 1:9
We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives.

Pray for the President? We’d love to!

It’s OK by God

We have lots of people converging on Washington DC, people from all sides of lots of issues. All of them should pause before their boots hit the streets, look skyward and sincerely say

May these words of my mouth
and this meditation of my heart
be pleasing in your sight, LORD.
(Psalm 19:14)

Forget the reporters, the cameras, the other marchers and your Twitter followers. God knows. And if it’s OK by God, it’s OK.
