Good Tools

The best tools are yet to come.

Micah 4:3 (GNT)
He will settle disputes among the nations, among the great powers near and far. They will hammer their swords into plows and their spears into pruning knives. Nations will never again go to war, never prepare for battle again.

When Christ reigns and tools of war become tools for peace.

Godless Tools

Isaiah 44:12-13, 15 (ESV)
The ironsmith takes a cutting tool and works it over the coals. He fashions it with hammers and works it with his strong arm . . . The carpenter stretches a line; he marks it out with a pencil. He shapes it with planes and marks it with a compass. He shapes it into the figure of a man, with the beauty of a man, to dwell in a house . . . he makes a god and worships it; he makes it an idol and falls down before it.

Beware — don’t worship the work of your own hands.

God’s Tools

God told His people:

Isaiah 41:15 (TLB)
You shall be a new and sharp-toothed threshing instrument to tear all enemies apart, making chaff of mountains.

Matthew Henry* put it this way:

“He is but an instrument, a tool in God’s hand.”
Matthew Henry’s Complete Commentary on the Whole Bible, 1706

You too can be a tool in God’s tool box.

*Matthew Henry (1652-1714) was a British minister and popular speaker. He is best known for his verse-by-verse commentary on the Old Testament, the Gospels and Acts.

Get Tools

Where will you find the best tools? Look to the Bible.

Timothy 2:15 (MEV)
Study to show yourself approved by God, a workman who need not be ashamed.

Got Tools?

Hebrews 4:12 (WE)
God’s word is living and full of power. It is more sharp than any sword that cuts on both sides.

The Bible — sharper than your finest saw, more powerful than your cordless drill or your pneumatic nail gun. Always the best tool for the job.

Fabulous Foundation

You’re part of God’s household.

Ephesians 2:19-21 (ESV)
You are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

You’re a soul under construction, growing into a holy temple.

Faultless Foundation

Isaiah 28:16-17 (VOICE)
See here, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone—
a cornerstone, chosen and precious—for a firm foundation. Whoever trusts in it will never be disgraced.

Justice will be the line by which I lay out its floor plan,
and righteousness will be My leveling tool.

God ‘s foundation — it’s just right.

Forever Foundation

Hebrews 11:10 (PHILLIPS)
Abraham’s eyes were looking forward
to that city with solid foundations of which
God himself is both architect and builder.

Not just the eternal city–God is the architect and builder of my soul and yours. Wow!

Holy Architect, beloved Builder, there are no words to thank you for designing me. Forgive my complaints, and continue to construct my soul on the foundation of Your eternal plan.

Firm Foundation

“How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord,
is laid for your faith in his excellent Word!”
Published 1787 by John Rippon
Attributed to “K” (whose name remains a mystery)

The complete hymn, How Firm a Foundation, was sung at President Andrew Jackson’s death bed and at President Theodore Roosevelt’s funeral.

Wouldn’t it make a great theme song for your life?

Faulty Foundation

Ever noticed how quickly some folks change their values to line up with the shifting sands of popular culture? They remind me of this Bible passage:

Matthew 7:26-27 (VOICE)
You are like a fool who builds a house on sand. When a storm comes to his house, what will happen? The rain will fall, the waters will rise, the wind will blow, and his house will collapse with a great crash.

Not to say you never find a faulty stone in your otherwise good foundation, thoughtfully remove it and replace it with a better stone.
