Time to Pray

Wondering when to pray?

Anytime!

Psalm 55:17 (YLT)
Evening, and morning, and noon,
I meditate, and make a noise,
and He heareth my voice.

God’s listening — anytime, all the time.

Prayer Advice

Having trouble hearing God?

Don’t quit praying. Ask for help. Find someone who hears God better than you do.

Proverbs 19:20 (ERV)
Listen to advice and accept discipline;
then you, too, will become wise.

Learn from these godly listeners. Ask them how and what they’re hearing.

Hearing God’s Side of Prayer

How do we hear God’s side of a prayerful chat?

If only he would speak loudly and clearly. But shouting isn’t really his style.

God may have already given us his answer — in the Bible. It might bubble up in a memory verse from our childhood. We may hear it in a sermon. We could look for it ourselves.

2 Timothy 3:16 (GW)
Every Scripture passage is inspired by God. All of them are useful for teaching, pointing out errors, correcting people, and training them for a life that has God’s approval.

Listen up and search the Scriptures.

Listening Prayer

Young Samuel grew up in the Tabernacle, under the care of Eli the priest. You can read the story of Samuel’s childhood in 1 Samuel 1 – 3.

1 Samuel 3:10 (NIRV)
The Lord came and stood there. He called out, just as he had done the other times. He said, “Samuel! Samuel!”

Then Samuel replied, “Speak. I’m listening.”

Three words. No fancy phrases. No list of prayer requests. Just a simple statement:

I’m listening, Lord.

Be like Samuel. Listen.

Prayer Goes Both Ways

You speak, God listens.

God speaks, you listen.

Have you been monopolizing the conversation?

Luke 11:28 (CEV)
The people who are really blessed are the ones
who hear and obey God’s message!

Praying Hand

Think of a child holding his daddy’s hand.

He feels safe.
He feels secure.
He feels loved.

When I’m scared, nervous or lonely, I can reach for my heavenly Daddy’s hand.

Psalm 139:10 (NIV)
Even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.

I raise my hand in prayer. No words needed.

Sketched Prayers

I draw some of my prayers. They’re simple line sketches, something I could squeeze into the margins of my Bible. It need not be perfect — God knows what I mean.

Difficult Prayers

Some prayers don’t come easily.

Think of someone you don’t like:

        • Your grumpy neighbor
        • The politician you despise
        • The coworker who did you wrong
        • The guy who bullied you back in middle school

Now, imagine that person wrapped in Christ’s embrace.

Matthew 5:44 (NIRV)
Love your enemies.
Pray for those who hurt you.

Just the image, no words required.
