“Were you there when
they crucified my Lord?
Oh, sometimes it causes me
to tremble, tremble, tremble.”
African-American Spiritual
I’m in my 8th decade of Easter celebrations. It’s tempting to take the crucifixion and resurrection for granted. I’ve been through Holy Week so many times, it seems ho-hum. Sometimes that attitude causes me to tremble.
Good morning, Lord. Your death and resurrection … it’s the most significant series of events since creation. Easter should be a drop-to-my-knees-in-awe occasion. Instead, I get caught up in the details of colored eggs, flowers and a fancy meal. Forgive me. Renew my spirit of astonishment, fill my soul with gratitude and joy.

Shirlee, thank you for your thought-provoking daily devotions. Today’s “Where Were You On Easter, was very poignant in that I, too, have participated in Easter many, many times. This morning’s question truly reminded me of how I’ve gone through the motions, but not been consumed by the meaning. Time for confession, repentance, and asking forgiveness. Thank you for the awesome reminder and for prompting me to get things straight.
Praise God for grace and mercy.
Renew my spirit of astonishment, fill my soul with gratitude and joy. This is my prayer too. I’m 74 and unless I don’t remember past Easters with great clarity, I’d say I was probably more aware this year of the sacrifice, the great cost of the Easter gift.
We’re soul sisters, Melinda, with too many Easters to remember all of them. But with age comes wisdom, thanks be to God.
I bless you in the name of Jesus, Shirlee. So lovely to know that you’re in your 80s. You’re such a powerful MIGHTY warrior in Christ!! Your wisdom has been such a gift in the P31 devotionals. I go back to old devotionals just to save the text you’ve written. I’ve had them recorded in my online journal. I treasure your words! God bless you with more words!!
I’m not quite to 80 yet, Jennifer. I hope to keep writing till thin and beyond.
Amen! May God help you Shirlee!! 💕
