My Election Prayer Story

Election Day, 2000: I skipped lunch and went to a nearby park. I sensed the Spirit’s nudge to pray for the candidates’ peace as the votes were tallied.

I pictured the candidates and their wives (George and Laura Bush, Al and Tipper Gore) heading to bed while the votes were counted. I prayed that they would sleep well in the midst of the unknown. I asked God to grant them peace of mind.

I thought this would be a one-night project. 2000 was the longest count in US history. I prayed this for more than a month.

I also “sensed the Spirit’s nudge to pray” during this 2022 mid-term election. When I was finally of age to vote, my father shared this wisdom with me. He said, “Shelly – it doesn’t matter who wins this election. The outcome is in God’s hands not ours, but, it is important that you do cast your vote. Whatever the outcome & whoever wins – especially if it wasn’t your candidate – pray for them to uphold our Constitution.” Amen
