Modest Thought

Modest. Per Merriam-Webster, moderate, neither bold nor self-assertive, decent.

Where does “modest” fit into our culture?

        • Good riddance!
        • Lost in the crowd
        • Where’s the drama in “modest”?

All to often, our clothes our homes, our cars and our attitudes scream, “Look at me!” Remember this, God’s already looking.

1 Samuel 16:7 (TLB)
But the Lord said to Samuel, “. . . I don’t make decisions the way you do! Men judge by outward appearance, but I look at a man’s thoughts and intentions.”

  1. I am a very modest man,
    as befits the very great
    who need not live with elan
    nor sport a trophy mate
    to flaunt their genius and their skill
    in living life so fine;
    yea, all that shows is outward will
    that awes even theDivine
    sensibilities on the throne;
    He looks, and can’t help but applaud
    the man whose days are in the zone,
    and who leaves Heaven awed.
    In seven days God brought all to life;
    but me, it would have taken five.

    • Shirlee Abbott says:

      I sometimes, in frustration, try to tell God how things could have been arranged a bit better (as in your verse). He sits me down for a serious conversation (think the last chapters of Job). In the end, I see that God is right. Always.
