Character Gained and Lost

“Character is made by many acts;
it may be lost by a single one.”
Credited to Aristotle (384-322 BC)

Ancient, simple wisdom. Building character takes time. Destroying character (yours or someone else’s) doesn’t.

  1. It is claimed it’s possible
to wreck character in just one act.
    So said wise old Aristotle
but I think that I object.
One’s inner soul is a mirror
    that can have layered dirt,
    and may need Ajax window-cleaner
    applied until it hurts,
but the shine will not be lost
    while the glass ain’t broken,
and though the cleaning bears a cost
    it’s offered as a token
of potential paid for by the Son
that reflects God’s grace in everyone.

Hmm, time to refresh my stash of window cleaner. My mirror is getting foggy.

Thank you, Andrew, for transforming the weekly chore of mirror-cleaning into a spiritual discipline.
