Out of a Disciple’s Storeroom

Matthew 13:52 (CEV)
So he [Jesus] told them, “Every student of the Scriptures who becomes a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like someone who brings out new and old treasures from the storeroom.”

New and old treasures–some think this means the New and Old Testaments. I wonder if it isn’t new and old wisdom. That is, a disciple doesn’t depend on old knowledge alone, but continually gathers new insights.

Dear Lord, keep adding new treasures to the old ones stored in my soul. And don’t let me be a hoarder. Teach me to share.

  1. Lord, I do not care for wisdom,
    nor gift of insightful grace;
    on my knees in cancer’s prison,
    please get me out of this place.
    I do not need more than time
    to live the moment given me;
    it’s not lyrical, nor sublime,
    and in its heart’s eternity.
    Lord, please place my fear in storage;
    I’ll unpack it when I’m through.
    Give me, please, an ounce of courage
    that may lead from hell to You
    Save me from banal and trite
    for now the flames raise sparks to night.
