Simple Prayers Work

God isn’t impressed by long, fancy words.

Short, simple prayers from a sincere heart are perfect.

  1. This, dear God, is all I’ve got:
    Get me out of here!
You know how very hard I’ve fought
and now I can’t get clear.
    Roll Dustoff and the QRF,
for Pete’s sake, roll the world!
All I see ’round me is death
    and Taliban flags unfurled.
And now they’re coming up the hill
    and everything’s too late.
It’s time, now for one last kill,
and I will meet my fate.
Give my pos to div arty
and fire for effect – on me.

Dustoff – medical evac by heli
    QRF – quick reaction force
pos – position, given in map coordinate
    div arty – division artillery
fire for effect – fire a given number of rounds on a known position

    • I am honored that your wise and poetic words grace my website. Can I make a request, Andrew? I’d like to see the poem you plan to recite upon your arrival at heaven’s gate. They say you can’t take it with you–surely that doesn’t apply to well chosen words. Bless your soul!

      • Shirlee, yes. This is it – not my words, but those of Henry Lee, who died a Japanese prisoner just before the end of WW2.

This is my witness, for a man far, far better than I could ever hope to be.

‘Fighting On – a poem by Henry Lee’

I see no gleam of victory alluring
No chance of splendid booty or of gain
If I endure – I must go on enduring
And my reward for bearing pain – is pain
Yet, though the thrill, the zest, the hope are gone
Something within me keeps me fighting on.

If my words mean anything, Snirlee, it is because I stand on giants’ shoulders.

  2. Shirlee Abbott says:

No, Andrew, you are one of the giants. Others will stand on your shoulders.
