Armed with Discipline

“Discipline is the soul of an army.”
George Washington (1732-1799)

Washington’s wisdom also applies to God’s army.

  1. According to Plato (whom I always confuse with Mickey Mouse’s dog), Socrates was supposed to have said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.”

I disagree; ‘know thyself’ has a limitation of perspective that can’t be overcome. In the end it’s like trying to lift oneself by one’s hair.

“The undisciplined life is not worth living” is far more cogent; discipline is liberation from sloth, and allows the attainment of heights of both effort and logic that can truly widen one’s horizon…and only thus, in discipline, can one truly know oneself.

    • Shirlee Abbott says:

      “Discipline is liberation.” Yes!

We’ve all got a little of the Exodus in us–when life gets hard, we think about walking away from liberation and going back to Egypt.

      • Been there. Got the T-shirt.

Cairo’s the only place I’ve ever seen that had a huge traffic arrow in a lane…and a few feet on, in the same lane, another arrow pointing in the opposite direction.
