Learn from the Best

It helps to have a great teacher.

1 Corinthians 2:10-12 (NLT)
But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.

The Holy Spirit–best teacher way back when, now and forever.

Your Bible Study Grade Card

2 Timothy 2:15 (AKJV)
Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Study? God’s Word?

What sort of grade would you get from God for your Bible study efforts?

  • A+ (I’m good!)
  • B (I try really hard)
  • C (I guess I’m average)
  • Lucky for me, he’s a God of mercy

What grade would you give yourself?

Be honest.

The Word of God deserves your best effort.

Safety for Chinese Christians

China is a big country, and Christians in different regions face different challenges. Government-approved churches are recognized by the Three Self Patriotic Movement (TSPM), meaning:

  • self-governed, self-funded, and self-propagated (with no foreign our outside missions influence);
  • patriotic, with primary allegiance to The People’s Republic.

House or underground churches, not under the TSPM umbrella, are considered illegal. In many places they operate without interference, but harassment is always a possibility.

The Chinese government is investing in mass surveillance (cameras, facial recognition, big data). According to BillionBibles.com,

‘The Chinese government will soon track virtually all movement and behavior of all of its citizens, . . . including who attends church, buys Bibles, and where those Bibles are taken.”

Let’s pray for our Christian brothers and sisters in China,

You, Lord, are the God who sees all. Look down on your children in China and protect them from those who watch them with evil intent. We know you hear their cries for wisdom, even when the words are not spoken aloud. Assure them of your love and grace.

The Work of Our Hands

Psalm 90:17 (NIV)
May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us;
establish the work of our hands for us–
yes, establish the work of our hands.

When the culture establishes the work of our hands,  favor is measured in status, power and salary. With God, it’s all about service and obedience.

When Work Is Scary

Too hard? Too much?

Fear not. You have a Helper.

2 Timothy 1:7 (ERV)
The Spirit God gave us does not make us afraid.
His Spirit is a source of power
and love and self-control.

For the Love of God, Work!

“And it is not necessary to have great things to do. I turn my little omelette in the pan for the love of God.”
Brother Lawrence (1614 – 1691)

Do everything, even the little things, for the love of God.

Your Best Job

What’s your dream job?

  • Earning the big bucks
  • Doing what I’m good at
  • Making the world a better place
  • All I want is a steady paycheck

Maybe your best job isn’t really about you.

Psalm 127:1 (NIV)
Unless the Lord builds the house,
the builders labor in vain.

If God isn’t behind it, it will never be a great job.

Safe Income

There’s nothing like the shelter of a steady paycheck. Lots of people have the ability, perseverance and good ideas to successfully run their own businesses. What they lack is start-up money.

There are places in the world where just a few American dollars can start or expand a profitable venture. Many Christian ministries offer loans or gifts in the name of Christ.

Christian Aid Ministries calls their program SALT: Shared Accountability, Lending, and Teaching. They use microloans, savings groups and agricultural and vocational training:

“Our goal is to walk alongside clients, helping them use the resources God has placed in their care and teaching them the importance of following Jesus in everyday life.”

Lord, you used a bit of bread and few fish to feed thousands. Use a bit of money and few eager hearts to provide safe and steady incomes in countless impoverished places.

A Simple Fall

Proverbs 16:18 (MSG)
First pride, then the crash—
the bigger the ego, the harder the fall.

Be humble and land gently.
