Sorting Them Out

I’m trying to have an honest conversation with myself about racism.

I thought about my ten years in the Medical Staff Office of a hospital. Certainly, I sorted doctors into categories:

        • Specialty–surgeons, internists, radiologists, etc.
        • The old guard and the newcomers
        • Those who never missed a deadline, those who needed a nudge, and those who had to be nagged

Even though I was the keeper of information on their ethnicity and education, it wasn’t on my radar. There was no time for that.

John 7:24a (TPT)
Stop judging based on the superficial.

There was work to be done.

Shelter from Religious Oppression

China is cracking down on religion. The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom recommended the U. S. government:

“Redesignate China as a ‘country of particular concern,’ or CPC, for engaging in systematic, ongoing, and egregious religious freedom violations . . . Impose targeted sanctions on Chinese government agencies and officials responsible for severe violations of religious freedom . . . Publicly express concerns about Beijing hosting the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.”

It’s not just Christianity. According to USCIRF

  • A million or more Uighur and other Muslims have been sent to concentration camps.
  • Tibetan Buddhism is being suppressed; thousands of monks and nuns have been displaced, some imprisoned and tortured.
  • Thousands of Falun Gong (meditation movement) practitioners have been arrested. Some may have had their organs “harvested.”
  • Hundreds of Christian churches have been raided or closed. Images of Christ are being replaced with photos of President Xi Jinping. Youth under age 18 are banned from participating in worship services.

Lord, we pray for a changed hearts: for President Xi–to humble himself and worship God; for Chinese authorities–to grant freedom of religion; for the US government–to exercise godly wisdom in all situations involving China; for Uighur, and Buddhists, Falun Gong and all those of other religions–that all may find their safe shelter in Christ.

Unfinished Discipline

My 40 days are up. But
the discipline continues.

Philippians 1:6 (NLT)

And I am certain that God,
who began the good work within you,
will continue his work until
it is finally finished on the day
when Christ Jesus returns.

Day 40 – God knows when His work in me will be finished.

39 Days of Discipline

Deuteronomy 8:5 (VOICE)
I want you to know in your hearts that
the Eternal your God has been training you
just as a parent trains a child.

Day 39 – I know in my heart that God has been training me.

Disciplined Service to God

All too often, my prayers are some version of
“Do it my way, Lord.”

That’s a far cry from Christ’s example:

Luke 22:42b (NIV)
“Not my will, but yours be done.”

Day 38 – God’s way.

Disciplined Service to the World

Matthew 13:38a (NIV)
The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom.

Day 37 – Good for the world.

Lord God, teach me to be a good seed.

Disciplined Service to My Community

Exercise discipline on the job and in my neighborhood:

Romans 12:16 (VOICE)
Work toward unity, and live in harmony with one another. Avoid thinking you are better than others or wiser than the rest; instead, embrace common people and ordinary tasks.

Day 36 – Be nice.

Disciplined Service to My Church

It’s the Sabbath day.

Hebrews 10:24-25 (TLB)
In response to all he has done for us, let us outdo each other in being helpful and kind to each other and in doing good.

Let us not neglect our church meetings, as some people do, but encourage and warn each other, especially now that the day of his coming back again is drawing near.

Day 35 – Devote the day to God. Be helpful and kind. Do good. And if you can, go to church.

Disciplined Fear

Remember the parable of the talents?

The master distributes talents to his servants.

Matthew 25:15 (ESV)
To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability.

Checking back later, he finds the first two servants have doubled their talents; the master praises their work. The third was afraid of the master and buried his talent. The master is not pleased.

Day 34 – Disciplined fear is a call to action (not inaction).

Generous, Diligent, Cheerful Discipline

Spiritual Gifts – we all have them.
Are we disciplined enough to exercise them?

Romans 12:6-8 (NIV)
We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Day 33 – Lord, show me what You want me to do and how to do it.
