Hard Seasons

“Ye who long pain and sorrow bear,

praise God and on him cast your care,
O praise him, O praise him,
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.”
St. Francis of Assisi (1182 – 1226)
Paraphrase: William Draper, 1919

Wikipedia’s literal translation of St. Francis’ original Italian (Umbrian dialect) canticle ends with these words.

“Praise and bless my Lord,
and give Him thanks
and serve Him with great humility.”

St. Francis left a legacy of poetic praise. Let’s bring his attitude of gratitude to the hard seasons of our lives.

Hard to Do

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (ERV)
Whatever happens, always be thankful.

Wow! Easier said than done.

Not distracted. Not bitter. Not frustrated.

No envy. No whining. No pouting.

Simply thankful. All the time.

Hard Times

Thank God for His good gifts.

James 1:2-4 (MSG)
Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.

Yes, hard times are good gifts.

Hard People

Are your prayers for politicians you like different from those for politicians you don’t like? Do you thank God for “your candidate” and bypass the opponent?

Matthew 5:44-46 (MSG)
I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does . . . If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that.

Pray the hard way–God’s way.

A Hard Thanksgiving Challenge

Is there anything you’re NOT thankful for?

        • Canceled plans
        • Disease
        • Political upheaval
        • Loss of control

Here’s your thanksgiving challenge:

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (JUB)
In every thing give thanks.

Each day this week, thank God for something (or someone) you don’t like. Hard to do? Probably.

A Sheltering Prayer for Children

November 20 is World Children’s Day. Per the United Nations website:

“World Children’s Day was first established in 1954
. . . to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children’s welfare.”

The 20th has come and gone. But in recognition of World Children’s Day, I’m sharing Ina Hughs’ poem. Read it prayerfully:

We pray for children
who sneak popsicles before supper,
who erase holes in math workbooks,
who can never find their shoes.

And we pray, for those
who stare at photographers from behind barbed wire,
who can’t bound down the street in a new pair of sneakers,
who never “counted potatoes,”
who are born in places where we wouldn’t be caught dead,
who never go to the circus,
who live in an X-rated world.

We pray for children
who bring us sticky kisses and fistfuls of dandelions,
Who sleep with the cat and bury goldfish,
Who hug us in a hurry and forget their lunch money,
Who squeeze toothpaste all over the sink,
Who slurp their soup.

And we pray for those
who never get dessert,
who have no safe blanket to drag behind them,
who watch their parents watch them die,
who can’t find any bread to steal,
who don’t have any rooms to clean up,
whose pictures aren’t on anybody’s dresser,
whose monsters are real.

We pray for children
who spend all their allowance before Tuesday,
who throw tantrums in the grocery store and pick at their food,
who like ghost stories,
who shove dirty clothes under the bed,
and never rinse out the tub,
who get visits from the tooth fairy,
who don’t like to be kissed in front of the carpool,
who squirm in church or temple and scream in the phone,
whose tears we sometimes laugh at
and whose smiles can make us cry.

And we pray for those
whose nightmares come in the daytime,
who will eat anything,
who have never seen a dentist,
who aren’t spoiled by anybody,
who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to sleep,
who live and move, but have no being.

We pray for children
who want to be carried
and for those who must,
for those we never give up on
and for those who don’t get a second chance.
For those we smother…
and for those who will grab the hand of anybody
kind enough to offer it.

We pray for children. Amen.
Ina J. Hughs

Unprecedented Power

We can be led astray by progress and popularity. Let’s keep it all in perspective.

Philippians 2:9-11 (MSG)
God lifted him [Christ] high and honored him far beyond anyone or anything, ever, so that all created beings in heaven and on earth—even those long ago dead and buried—will bow in worship before this Jesus Christ, and call out in praise that he is the Master of all, to the glorious honor of God the Father.

Prophetic Power

Revelation 1:1, 3 (NET)
The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must happen very soon . . .Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy aloud, and blessed are those who hear and obey the things written in it, because the time is near!

The book of Revelation: it’s powerful reading.

Prayer Power

Never underestimate the power of prayer.

James 1:5 (NLT)
If you need wisdom,
ask our generous God,
and he will give it to you.

Providential Power

“The truth, Lord, is that you are the only source of holiness. Righteousness is mere dust unless it comes from you. No wisdom can direct us, unless you are the guide. No courage can sustain us, unless you are our defence. No vigilance can protect us, unless you watch over all that we do.”
Thomas à Kempis (1380-1471)

Thomas was a copyist and writer. He copied the Bible at least four times. He is best known for his devotional book, “The Imitation of Christ.”
