Blessed Bread

The disciples faced thousands of hungry souls:

Matthew 14:19-20 (ESV)
Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he [Jesus] looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over.

Blessed bread goes a long ways!

No Bread

Amos 8:11-12 (ESV)
“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God,
“when I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
but of hearing the words of the Lord.
They shall wander from sea to sea,
    and from north to east;
they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord,
but they shall not find it.

What’s worse than life without bread? Life without God.

Good Bread

Matthew 7:9, 11 (ESV)
Which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? . . . If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

Are you spiritually hungry? Ask God for bread, and take a seat at your Bible study table.

He will answer. And it won’t be with a stone.

Tasteless Bread

Sometimes, like Job, I find a world of trouble on my table. I don’t want any of it–not even a nibble.

Job 6:6 (MEV)
Is tasteless food eaten without salt?
Or is there any taste in the white of an egg?

At its best, it’s tasteless. At its worst, it makes me sick.

Lord God, I’m tired of the world’s tasteless fare. I crave the salt of Your Word. Season my daily bread with grace.

Lazy Bread

Let’s take a Lenten look at the noble woman of Proverbs:

Proverbs 31:27 (NIV)
She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.

This bread leads to more than laziness.

“Idle Christians are not tempted of the devil
so much as they tempt the devil to tempt them.”
Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892)

Don’t be led into temptation–avoid the bread of idleness.

Deceitful Bread

Proverbs 20:17 (ESV)
Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man,
but afterward his mouth will be full of gravel.

If a lie works, it tastes like sugar. If it comes back to haunt you, it tastes like sand. Beware . . . “if” often becomes “when.” Watch out for deceitful bread–don’t take that first, sweet bite.

Approved Bread

John 6:27 (NIV)
Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.

Nothing beats our heavenly Father’s seal of approval. Why chase after anything else? Go for eternal bread.

Hidden Bread

Revelation 2:17 (NIV)
Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna.

“Hidden manna.” Hidden spiritual meaning. To be heard with spiritual ears.

“Happy is that man who reads the Scriptures and hears the word—searching all the while for the hidden spiritual sense, which is indeed the voice of God.”
Charles Haddon Spurgeon, 1871
Sermon: “Hidden Manna”

Hidden bread. The voice of God, heard with your spiritual ears. Listen with care.

Sweet Bread

The Israelites ate manna in the wilderness. It showed up in the morning, like dew.

Exodus 16:31 (NIV)
The people of Israel called the bread manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey.

Sweet.

John 6:32-33
Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

The Bread from heaven gives life. Sweet!

Not Bread

Isaiah 55:2 (NIV)
Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?

Is the stuff you buy good for you? Or is it “not bread,” good for neither body nor soul?
