A Wicked Portion

Know some evil folks? Wonder how they get away with it all?

They won’t. They may be OK now, but their future looks grim.

Psalm 11:6 (NASB)
He will rain coals of fire upon the wicked,
And brimstone and burning wind
will be the portion of their cup.

Their daily cuppa will smell like sulfur and taste like dry sand. Ponder that while you sip your morning coffee.

A Good Portion

Psalm 119:57 (NIV)
You are my portion, Lord;
I have promised to obey your words.

Preacher Spurgeon explained “portion” in a few simple words.

Spurgeon lived up to the whole verse — he obeyed God’s words, preaching to more than a million people and pouring millions into education and the care of orphans, widows and victims of domestic abuse.

Ponder his wisdom. It’s good for you.

My Portion

Psalm 73:26 (NIV)

My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.

God is my portion? Makes me wonder.

Per my dictionary, a portion is a bit, a piece, a slice. A slice of God? Not what I picture.

So I look at the Hebrew: cheleq — tract, territory, equal part, inheritance, legacy, reward.

It’s my slice of eternity, my equal part with my brothers and sisters in Christ, my happily-ever-after forever.

Whole-Hearted Work

Hate your work? ?  Wondering why you bother?

Maybe you’re going at it with the wrong attitude, working for the wrong boss.

Colossians 3:23-24 (MSG)

Work from the heart
for your real Master,
for God,
confident that you’ll get paid in full
when you come into your inheritance.

Let God be your Boss. It’ll pay off in the end.

Winsome Work

There’s a sweet little book, The Practice of the Presence of God, filled with bits of Brother Lawrence’s conversations and writings — wise words like these:

Easier to read than to put into practice. And well worth the effort.

What Work?

Psalm 90:17 (NIV)

May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands.

“Establish” our work:

aim
appoint
confirm
direct
form
make ready
ordain
provide
strengthen

Work per God’s plan.
