The Spirit’s Power in Me

In Jesus Christ’s own words:

John 20:22 (NLT)
Then he breathed on them and said,
“Receive the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 1:8
“You will receive power when
the Holy Spirit comes upon you.”

The breath of God = POWER.

Breathe on me, breath of God. Breathe in me!

The Son’s Love in Me

John 13:34 (NLT)
So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.

“. . . two notes, though different, may be in perfect harmony, so is it with the heart of Christ and the heart of his renewed child. What Jesus loves, we love; what Jesus hates, we hate; what Jesus seeks, we seek; what Jesus shuns, we shun. This is true friendship when there is but one heart in two bodies.”
Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Sermon: Friendship’s Guide, 1870

Tune my heart, dear Jesus, to harmonize with Yours.

The Father’s Wisdom in Me

Psalm 19:7-8 9 (NLT)
The instructions of the Lord are perfect,
    reviving the soul.
The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy,
    making wise the simple.
The commandments of the Lord are right,
    bringing joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are clear,
                                                      giving insight for living.

Good things from God’s mind to mine: positive thoughts, wisdom, joy and insight.

The Trinity in Me

We humans need brain, heart and lungs for physical life. Likewise, we need Father, Son and Spirit for spiritual life.

      • Father – the head, the wisdom
      • Son – the heart, the love
      • Spirit – the breath, the power

God in me: wisdom, love and power.

“It was the whole Trinity, which at the beginning of creation said, ‘Let us make man.’ It was the whole Trinity again, which at the beginning of the Gospel seemed to say, ‘Let us save man.’

J. C. Ryle (1816-1900)

Submit to the Lord

Submit.

It’s hard to do. But if we

      • know the Lord (Monday’s post)
      • listen to the Lord (Tuesday)
      • inquire of the Lord (Wednesday)
      • trust in the Lord (Thursday)
      • submission to the Lord comes naturally

“My dear almighty Lord,
My Conqueror and my King,
Thy scepter and Thy sword,
Thy reigning grace I sing:
Thine is the power; behold, I sit
In willing bonds beneath Thy feet.”
Isaac Watts
Join All the Glorious Names, 1709

Trust in the Lord

My posts this week lay out a process:

  • Know the Lord
  • Listen to the Lord
  • Inquire of the Lord
  • Trust in the Lord

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)
Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.

Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.

Know, listen, ask . . . and trust God’s answer. He is, after all, God. And you’re not.

Inquire of the Lord

Inquire of the Lord.

The phrase is found in several Old Testament passages. Here’s one:

2 Samuel 2:1 (ESV)
After this David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” David said, “To which shall I go up?” And he said, “To Hebron.”

“Inquire of the Lord.” You’re not asking God to bless your plans. You’re asking God to make your plans. And per yesterday’s post, listen for God’s answer.

Listen to the Lord

Yesterday’s post is titled Know the Lord.

God already knows you better than you know yourself. You’ll never know God better if you’re the one doing all the talking.

Take a cue from young Samuel.

1 Samuel 3:10 (CEV)
The Lord then stood beside Samuel
and called out as he had done before,
 “Samuel! Samuel!”
“I’m listening,” Samuel answered.

God wants you to know him better. Be like Samuel.

Know the Lord

Psalm 46:10

Be still, and know
that I am God.

Know the Lord.

Know — in Hebrew, yada: acknowledge, get acquainted, discover, experience, have a relationship with, be known by.

Be still and have face-to-face time with God.
Be still and be known by God.
Be still and know God.

Stop. Hush! Be still.

Light the Way

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path
.

It is true the head needs illumination, but even more the feet need direction, else head and feet may both fall into a ditch. Happy is the man who personally appropriates God’s word, and practically uses it as his comfort and counselor, — a lamp to his feet.”
Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892)
Exposition of Psalm 119:105-112

I want to see where I’m going.

Light up my mind, Lord, and light up my path. Keep my head and feet out of the ditch.
