Fear’s Cure

“We fear men so much,
because we fear God so little.
One fear cures another.
When man’s terror scares you,
turn your thoughts to the wrath of God.”
William Gurnall (1616-1679)
A Puritan Golden Treasury

  1. I do not fear the wrath of men;
let them fear my coming, in the night.
They will learn the meaning, then,
of the things you should not fight.
Let them know their pride was error,
and their boasts were merely vain,
for time is coming of the terror,
and ’tis I will bring the pain.
I was once as all men have been,
measured, and most calm to please,
but I have witnessed what I’ve seen
and vengeance now is heaven’s ease.
    Evil folk, fear your survival,
for judgement comes with my arrival.
