Simply Not Good Enough

Under slavery, there were laws against teaching people of color to read and write. Some urban schools are the 21st-century version, cutting students off from future success.

This is unacceptable. We Christians should raise our voices:

  • prayerfully, asking God to remove the barriers.
  • politically, advocating for better practices.
  • practically, keeping our own words short, simple and easy to read.

  1. I agree with the first two points, but not necessarily the third; some concepts will never be easy, and we need to aim at raising the skills to make them accessible.

    • Shirlee Abbott says:

I work as a part-time classroom aide with the goal of raising skills, Andrw. But in the meantime, I communicate at the students’ level–throwing in a few higher-level thoughts, aiming to intrigue but not discourage.
